We walk into Debonairs Pizza Uchumi Hyper along Ngong Road at a busy time of the day,Evening. Nairobians have made it a habit of passing by this perfectly located eatery on their way home to grab a Hot Sub, a chicken wing or their favourite Pizza. We meet one guy struggling to balance a stack of 5 pizza boxes on one hand as he walks out of the restaurant to his car. At the counter, behind a small crowd of customers, a young couple wait impatiently for their order to be packaged. Shortly afterwards, their large Hawaiian Pizza arrives brought by Chef Mary Wairimu, a pleasant coincidence because she is the subject of our visit to Debonaires.


We are here to meet Chef Mary. An immensely captivating lady who has been a Chef at Debonaires from 2013 to date. We are here to interview her and photograph her for the Chefs Delight Magazine. Chef Mary is one of the 25 Chefs who will be showcasing at the Chefs Delight Culinary Awards Gala in a fortnight. It’s not hard to see why she made the cut. Beyond her culinary talents, Chef Mary is a delightful person. She is warm and friendly with an infectious smile and laugh that betrays her youthful exuberance. I cannot help but draw similarities between how she handles us and the way the establishment she works for, Debonaires, handles their customers. Perhaps, this has been the key in ensuring Debonaires customers are a satisfied lot, literally and figuratively, beyond their delicious, finger-licking pizza. There is no point in having the best pizzas or Tikka Chicken in town when your customers don’t feel the warmth and care of the people who serve them.

Chef Mary started her culinary journey in 2009 in Mombasa. She then moved to Mpande Dishes Hotel in Mpande to further her culinary skills before leaving the white beaches of the Kenyan Coast to settle in Nairobi where she has been with Debonaires Pizza since 2013. This journey, she says, has only just begun. By showcasing her cuisine at the Gala Awards, she hopes to continue learning and improving so that she can be the best Chef in town. Winning an award on the Gala Night would go a long way in helping her achieve that dream.

 Chef Mary Wairimu will be showcasing at the Chefs Delight Culinary Awards Gala on the 9th of September at KICC. The tickets for this one of a kind event are only Kshs. 6,000 per person and Kshs. 60,000 for a corporate table seating 10 people. When you get to the Tsavo Ballroom where the event will take place at, ensure that you pass by the Debonaires Stand and have a taste of Chef Mary’s delights.
